Base Transaction Surge Crowds Out Robinhood Chain From Ethereum Blob Space
Robinhood Chain's batches stopped reaching Ethereum for 14 minutes across an 18‑minute stretch on Friday, the longest single gap 8 minutes 36 seconds. Its own blocks never stopped.

A sudden spike in transaction volume on Coinbase’s Base L2 filled Ethereum’s temporary data storage (blob) capacity on Friday, causing Robinhood Chain’s batch postings to Ethereum to pause for a total of 14 minutes.
What happened
Base’s blocks began filling at 12:30 UTC and its batcher started posting to Ethereum four times faster than usual. Ethereum blocks quickly hit the 21‑blob ceiling, pushing the blob base fee up 27‑fold within half an hour. As a result, Robinhood Chain’s batch poster failed to land a batch for 8 minutes 36 seconds (12:29:47 – 12:38:23 UTC) and then for another 5 minutes 24 seconds (12:42:47 – 12:48:11 UTC). The chain continued producing its own blocks uninterrupted, so users on the Robinhood app saw no direct impact.
Technical details
- Robinhood Chain produced 106,756 blocks between 12:00 – 15:00 UTC (≈1 block every 101 ms).
- The batch poster (address 0xDaa5…87F4) normally submits a blob transaction every ~12 seconds; during the outage it posted only nine times over an 18‑minute window.
- Ethereum’s blob base fee rose from 0.0055 gwei to 0.1473 gwei between 12:25 – 12:53 UTC.
- During the peak, a three‑blob Robinhood batch cost about $0.14.
Who contributed to the congestion
Base was the primary driver of the congestion. Its blob usage jumped from 222 blobs to 593 blobs in the same time frame, nearly tripling its share of Ethereum’s blob space. Total blob supply across all senders rose 59 % (1,058 → 1,678 blobs). Robinhood Chain still accounted for 28 % of blobs during the peak, the highest share of any single sender.
Network response
Arbitrum, the underlying L2, posted a statement confirming that Robinhood Chain experienced batch‑posting delays due to L1 blob market behavior but no downtime for user transactions. Robinhood has not released a technical post‑mortem.
Impact on fees and activity
- Robinhood Chain paid $4.59 million in fees over the 24‑hour period, a 3.1 % increase.
- TVL rose to $839.7 million; DEX volume reached $1.69 billion, up 8.6 % daily.
- Base’s block transaction count surged to an average of 1,428 transactions per block during the 10‑minute burst, compared with 174 transactions per block earlier.
Key assets involved
Ethereum’s blob market, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, ARB token, and PONS token.
