Altcoin Perpetual Open Interest Surpasses Bitcoin for First Time Since 2024
Altcoin perpetual futures open interest exceeded Bitcoin’s on Sept. 6, driven by a surge in Zcash leverage and a broader rally in the altcoin market.

On Sept. 6, aggregate open interest in altcoin perpetual futures moved above Bitcoin’s level for the first time since December 2024, according to Coinalyze data. The shift reflects heightened leveraged trading as Zcash and other altcoins rallied.
Open‑interest snapshot
Bitcoin’s perpetual open interest stayed near $23.9 billion, representing roughly 37 % of the total tracked positions. Altcoin perpetual contracts collectively held a larger share, pushing the combined altcoin open interest above Bitcoin’s.
Zcash leads the altcoin surge
Zcash (ZEC) open interest climbed to about $2.4 billion, with short liquidations exceeding $34 million during the breakout. The token rose roughly 20 % in early September, reaching an intraday high near $1,023 and trading around $1,192 on Sept. 7.
Spot market context
Altcoin market capitalization outside the top ten assets rose above $200 billion in early September, up more than 10 % from the start of the month. Bitcoin traded near $79,575, down about 0.4 % on Sept. 7.
Interpretation of open interest
Open interest measures the dollar value of outstanding derivatives contracts, not the direction of trader sentiment. Rising open interest indicates more participation or leverage, while funding rates and liquidation data are needed to gauge bullish or bearish pressure.
Risks and outlook
Elevated open interest can amplify price moves if leveraged positions outpace market depth, leading to rapid liquidations. The current crossover is a snapshot; Bitcoin remains the largest individual derivatives market, and the altcoin share could shift again as traders adjust positions.
