In the same period, the combined market cap of altcoins increased by roughly $135 billion. This contributed to a broader market recovery that added about $500 billion to total crypto market value, bringing the overall capitalization to nearly $2.74 trillion in the third week of August.

Price Movements

Several altcoins posted gains approaching 100% over short intervals, and ether rose 31.2% over seven days. Bitcoin also rallied, crossing $81,000 on August 25 after a near‑30% increase during the rally.

The CFTC warned that spot crypto markets can experience flash crashes, manipulation, and limited oversight. The SEC highlighted typical risks for crypto asset securities, including volatility, illiquidity, and concentrated ownership.

Altcoin Season Assessment

Despite the volume surge, the Blockchaincenter Altcoin Season Index stood at 37 on August 26, well below the 75% threshold required to label the period an “altcoin season.”
