Americans Seek Retirement Security but Remain Skeptical of Bitcoin in Retirement Plans

A National Institute on Retirement Security survey finds 77% of Americans view cryptocurrency in retirement accounts as risky, while 80% believe the U.S. faces a retirement crisis.

Most Americans are hesitant to include cryptocurrency in their retirement savings, according to a recent survey by the National Institute on Retirement Security (NIRS). The poll of 1,203 U.S. adults shows that 77% consider crypto in retirement plans risky, with 46% labeling it "very risky."

Retirement Anxiety on the Rise

Concern about retirement security is growing: 80% now say the United States faces a retirement crisis, up from 67% in 2020, and 61% fear they will not be financially secure after they stop working. Inflation worries 73% of savers, market volatility troubles 62%, and 76% fear potential Social Security cuts.

Savings Shortfalls

Nearly half of Americans have saved less than $100,000 for retirement, and 18% have no retirement savings at all. Only 9% understand that a $100,000 nest egg would generate roughly $4,000 in first‑year retirement income under a standard withdrawal rule.

Regulatory Landscape

Regulators have shifted their stance on crypto in retirement accounts. In 2022, the Labor Department advised employers to exercise "extreme care" before adding crypto to 401(k) plans, a guidance that was later rescinded in May 2025. An August 2025 executive order directed the department to permit alternative assets, including crypto funds, in 401(k)s, followed by a new proposed rule in March.

Public Trust Deficit

Beyond the risk perception, 53% of respondents oppose employers offering crypto at all, and 84% feel that Washington leaders do not understand their retirement challenges. By contrast, 76% view traditional pensions favorably.

Bitcoin’s Position

Bitcoin (BTC), the largest cryptocurrency, is the primary asset referenced in the discussion, trading near $78,092 at the time of reporting. Despite regulatory openings, three‑quarters of workers still consider crypto risky, leaving employers caught between regulatory permission and employee skepticism.
