August Sets 2026 Record for Crypto Hacks While Total Losses Drop Nearly Half

Blockchain security firm PeckShield reported 50 major crypto hacks in August 2026, the most for any month this year. Despite the surge in attack frequency, total losses dropped to $136.3 million, down 49.5% from July’s $270 million.

Attack volume up, individual hauls down

The average loss per incident fell to about $2.7 million, compared with roughly $9 million in July. PeckShield’s ten largest incidents accounted for $123.34 million of the total, leaving only $12.9 million spread across the remaining 40 hacks.

Largest exploit: Tectonic on Cronos

The biggest single theft involved Tectonic, the leading lending protocol on the Cronos (CRO) blockchain, which lost roughly $74 million. The attacker moved about $6 million to Ethereum (ETH) before validators halted the network. PeckShield noted that the stolen funds are now being laundered, with around $200 k bridged to Bitcoin (BTC). Cronos validators restored the chain to a pre‑attack state and resumed block production.

Year‑to‑date context

August’s 50 hacks surpass the 40 recorded in each of April, May and June. Earlier in the year, PeckShield counted 16 hacks in January, 15 in February and 20 in March. April remains the costliest month of 2026, with $646.89 million in losses driven by the Drift and KelpDAO exploits.
