Bank of Japan hikes rates to 1.25%, yen slides and Bitcoin gains against JPY

The BOJ raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, the highest in 31 years, prompting a drop in the yen and a modest rise in Bitcoin’s yen price while its dollar price stayed near $76,900.

The Bank of Japan increased its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on Friday, bringing it to 1.25% – the highest level in three decades. The move, aimed at curbing persistent inflation and a weak yen, was the central bank’s second hike in three months.

Yen depreciation

Following the announcement, the Japanese yen weakened against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/JPY pair moving to 156.70 from 156.20.

Bitcoin’s reaction

On the Tokyo‑based bitFlyer exchange, the Bitcoin‑Japanese yen pair (BTC/JPY) rose about 0.5% to JPY 12.06 million. In dollar terms, Bitcoin’s price remained largely unchanged around $76,900.

Market context

The rate hike and yen movement are closely watched by global markets because Japan’s long‑standing near‑zero rates have supported carry‑trade financing. A shift in that dynamic could affect broader asset classes, including equities and cryptocurrencies.
