BitBox Adds Lightning Hot Wallet Integrated with Existing Backup

BitBox announced that its latest BitBoxApp update adds a self‑custody Lightning hot wallet. The new wallet is created from the same backup phrase used for the hardware device, so users do not need to record an additional mnemonic.

Separate Spending and Savings Balances

The Lightning balance is kept distinct from the on‑chain Bitcoin stored in the hardware wallet. Users can move only the amount they wish to spend into the hot wallet, leaving the remainder secured by the device’s cold‑storage model.

Lightning Functionality Within the App

• Scan and pay Lightning invoices.
• Generate invoices and a dedicated Lightning address for receiving payments.
• Transfer funds between the Lightning hot wallet and the on‑chain BitBox wallet.

Payments are processed online, so the hardware device is not required for each transaction.

Infrastructure Powered by Breez SDK and Spark

BitBox uses the Breez SDK to add non‑custodial payment features and Spark (by Lightspark) to handle channel management, liquidity and node operation. This removes the need for users to run a Lightning node or manage payment channels.

Security and Tax Considerations

While the Lightning wallet offers convenience, it remains a hot wallet and should be treated like cash carried in a physical wallet. Larger amounts are recommended to stay in the hardware wallet. In the United States, Bitcoin spent via Lightning is a taxable disposal; users must track cost basis, fair market value at the time of payment, and holding period to calculate capital gains or losses.
