Bitcoin reaches $86,000, US spot ETF investors return to profit

Bitcoin’s rally toward $86,000 has pushed US spot exchange‑traded fund (ETF) investors back into profit after months underwater.

Bitcoin surged to around $86,000, lifting the average US spot Bitcoin ETF holder back above water for the first time since January. The price gain of roughly 6% in the past 24 hours extended the cryptocurrency’s September rebound.

Cost‑basis benchmarks

Bloomberg Intelligence estimates the “buys‑only” cost basis for US Bitcoin ETFs at about $81,722 per Bitcoin, while the net cost basis sits nearer the current market price. With Bitcoin trading near $85,165, both measures are now surpassed.

Unrealized gains and losses

ETF investors held about $86.32 billion in unrealized gains on Oct. 6, 2025, which were erased by a later sell‑off, leaving a $780 million loss by Sept. 18. The recent price rise has erased that loss, restoring the cohort to profit.

ETF inflows and outflows

SoSoValue data show cumulative net inflows peaked at $61.19 billion in Oct. 2025 and fell to roughly $55.16 billion, about $6.03 billion below the peak. In 2026 the funds recorded $1.46 billion of net outflows, with withdrawals in Jan‑Feb offset by inflows in Mar‑Apr, then a net outflow of $6.94 billion in May‑Jun. July‑Sept 2026 saw modest inflows of $172 million, $3.52 billion and $314 million respectively.

Weekly flow dynamics

During the most recent week the ETFs posted a net inflow of $6.21 million, while daily flows swung sharply—$160 million in on Monday, $450 million out on Tuesday, $296 million out on Wednesday, $160 million in on Thursday, and $433 million in on Friday, the latter driven largely by Fidelity’s FBTC product.

Trading volume for the ETFs was about $16.17 billion, making the net weekly inflow roughly 0.04% of turnover. The week’s net inflow improved on the prior period’s $463 million net outflow.

Implications

The return to profitability occurs despite ETF capital remaining below its 2025 high. Whether the price crossing of cost‑basis levels spurs sustained new inflows or prompts profit‑taking by existing holders will shape the next phase of Bitcoin’s market dynamics.
