Bitcoin Price Nears 4 Million Lira as Turkey’s Currency Hits Record Low

Turkey’s lira has fallen to a fresh record low near 48.8 per dollar, while bitcoin’s price now costs roughly 3.95 million lira.

Turkey’s lira has slipped to around 48.8 per U.S. dollar, pushing the price of a single bitcoin to almost 4 million lira. The depreciation reflects a prolonged loss of purchasing power rather than a sudden collapse.

Currency Depreciation and Inflation

Five years ago, one dollar bought between 8.3 and 8.9 lira. Today it costs nearly six times as much. Official inflation stood at 31.51% in August, while an independent tracker (ENAG) estimated it at 49.03%. Core price categories—housing, utilities, food and transport—have risen between 34% and 40% year‑on‑year.

Monetary Policy Context

The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye maintains a policy rate of 37%. Against the official inflation figure this yields a thin real return; against the higher independent estimate savers are still losing ground. The weaker lira also raises the cost of imported energy, adding pressure to households.

Household Wealth Preservation

Turkish households are diversifying away from the lira. Estimates suggest roughly $600 billion worth of gold is held outside the banking system, alongside foreign‑currency deposits (about 38‑41% of total deposits) and real‑estate assets. Crypto assets, particularly bitcoin and the stablecoin USDT, have become part of this “under‑the‑pillow” portfolio.

Crypto Adoption and Regulation

Turkey ranked 14th on Chainalysis’ 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index and leads the MENA region with about $200 billion in annual transaction volume. Residents may legally buy, hold and sell bitcoin, but a 2021 central‑bank rule bars the direct use of crypto for payments. The 2024 Crypto Asset Law placed exchanges under the Capital Markets Board, tightening oversight while keeping trading permissible.

Implications for Savers

With the lira approaching 4 million per bitcoin and inflation remaining above 30%, many Turks view bitcoin as an alternative store of value rather than a medium of exchange. Legal constraints prevent using crypto for everyday purchases, but the asset remains accessible through regulated platforms.
