Bitcoin Near $86,000 as Oil Prices Drop and Stock Markets Rise

Bitcoin traded close to $86,000 after rebounding from Asian-session lows, supported by falling oil prices, strong equity markets, and inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs.

Bitcoin hovered around $86,000 on Monday, recovering from Asian-session lows near $85,000. The rally coincided with a decline in WTI crude futures, which slipped below $90 a barrel, and a broad rise in global equity markets.

Market drivers

Falling oil prices are easing inflation concerns, which could reduce pressure for further Federal Reserve rate hikes. At the same time, the Nasdaq index posted a sharp gain, boosting overall risk appetite. Spot bitcoin exchange‑traded funds in the United States attracted nearly $1 billion in inflows, the largest single‑day amount since October of the previous year.

Futures and positioning

Crypto futures volume jumped 38% to $292 billion in the past 24 hours, while open interest rose only 1% to $157 billion, pushing the volume‑to‑open‑interest ratio close to 2. This pattern, together with $768 million in liquidations that were mostly short positions, points to a short‑covering squeeze rather than fresh long buying.

Bitcoin futures open interest edged higher to 716,000 BTC, the highest level since late August, though still below the average of roughly 750,000 BTC seen earlier in the year. Ether (ETH) and Solana (SOL) futures open interest continued to decline, indicating traders remain cautious about leverage on those assets. XRP open interest rose to 2.46 billion tokens, mirroring Bitcoin’s modest increase.

Whale activity and volatility

Coinglass data showed a bearish 24‑hour whale bias for XRP, DOGE and gold, while Bitcoin was extremely bullish and ETH and SOL were bullish. Despite price gains, the 24‑hour cumulative volume delta for major coins remained negative, suggesting sell‑side taker flow outpaced buy‑side flow in futures markets.

Implied volatility indexes for Bitcoin and Ethereum stayed within recent ranges and well below the peaks recorded earlier in the year, indicating that traders view the current rally as orderly.

Other market moves

Memecoins such as PEPE, DOGE and SHIB were among the top‑performing tokens over the past day, reflecting heightened speculative interest. DOGE’s open interest surged 10%, the largest jump among the top‑10 coins.

ZetaChain governance

Separately, ZetaChain token holders voted overwhelmingly (over 99% in favor) to retire the ZetaChain blockchain and migrate the ZETA token to Solana. The proposal passed with a 58% turnout, exceeding the 40% threshold required for approval.
