Rising U.S. Debt Boosts Bitcoin’s Long‑Term Appeal, Says BlackRock Executive

BlackRock’s Robbie Mitchnick says the $40 trillion U.S. debt burden strengthens Bitcoin’s case as an alternative store of value.

BlackRock’s global head of digital assets, Robbie Mitchnick, argues that the United States’ growing debt load and persistent fiscal deficits are strengthening the investment case for Bitcoin as a hedge against fiat currency risk.

Debt Levels Reach New Milestone

U.S. gross federal debt topped $40.05 trillion on 18 August, according to Treasury data. The figure includes roughly $32.3 trillion held by the public and $7.8 trillion in intragovernmental holdings, more than double the $19.95 trillion level in 2017.

Fiscal Concerns as Market Drivers

Mitchnick highlighted that the Congressional Budget Office projects a $1.9 trillion deficit for fiscal year 2026, with potential growth to $3.1 trillion by 2036 under current law. He said that rising debt and deficits are becoming “a major concern for markets,” prompting investors to look for assets outside the sovereign monetary system.

Bitcoin’s Recent Performance

During the latest market rebound, Bitcoin posted its strongest three‑day advance since 2023, climbing from the low‑$60,000 range to near $80,000 before partially retracing. The rally was supported by ETF inflows, short covering, a weaker dollar and shifts in Treasury bond markets.

Regulatory Landscape

Bitcoin already enjoys a relatively clear U.S. regulatory position: the SEC approved spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, and the CFTC treats Bitcoin as a commodity. Mitchnick noted that pending market‑structure legislation, such as the CLARITY Act, could affect decentralized finance more than Bitcoin itself.

Long‑Term Investment Thesis

Mitchnick described Bitcoin as “digital gold,” a scarce, decentralized monetary alternative that may serve as a hedge against inflation and currency depreciation. He cautioned that the thesis is oriented toward long‑term allocation rather than short‑term price prediction.
