Bitcoin Whales Urged Early Investor to Buy Zcash Before $1,000 Rally

In a recent interview, early Bitcoin investor Dan Held disclosed that several long‑standing Bitcoin whales privately encouraged him to purchase Zcash (ZEC) months before the token broke the $1,000 level.

Whale Outreach to a Bitcoin Veteran

Held, who joined Bitcoin in 2012 and previously led marketing at Kraken, said the messages came from investors with eight‑ and nine‑figure net worths who have been trading Bitcoin since 2013. Over a period of roughly three to six months, these investors suggested he buy ZEC when the price ranged between $100 and $400.

Funding the Trade

According to Held, many of the whales financed the suggested purchase by reducing a fifth to an eighth of their long‑term Bitcoin holdings.

Rally and Market Reaction

Zcash later surpassed $1,000, marking its first breach of that threshold in nearly a decade. The rally was supported by inflows into Grayscale’s ZCSH ETF fund. Held noted that Zcash has risen about 182% over the past three months.

Held’s Skepticism

Held expressed doubt about the timing of the whales’ advice, arguing that crypto narratives usually form after an asset has already moved. He contrasted Zcash’s supply model with Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million cap, highlighting a community‑accepted trade‑off between privacy and supply auditability.

Supply Uncertainty and Market Sentiment

Held recalled a period of confusion over a possible exploit that temporarily obscured the exact circulating supply of ZEC, a situation he said would be unacceptable for an asset positioned as “digital gold.” He also mentioned that short sellers in Zcash have been squeezed as sentiment shifted rapidly.
