Bloomberg Analyst Says Crypto Market Faces Poor Returns and High Volatility

Mike McGlone, senior commodity strategist at Bloomberg Intelligence, highlighted that the cryptocurrency market has delivered weak returns and elevated volatility since 2017. He linked this performance to a shift in Federal Reserve policy toward higher interest rates and to what he described as an overvalued S&P 500 index.

Crypto Index Performance

McGlone used the Bloomberg Galaxy Crypto Index (BGCI) as a proxy for the broader market. The index, which tracks the top USD‑denominated digital assets and is rebalanced monthly, has underperformed relative to traditional markets while exhibiting roughly four times the volatility.

Factors Behind the Trend

• Since 2021, the Fed moved from a dovish stance that supported liquidity to a hawkish stance aimed at curbing inflation, with at least one more rate hike expected in 2026.
• Equity market valuations, measured by the S&P 500’s capitalization relative to GDP and public debt, are at historically high levels, increasing the risk of a market pullback.
• Unrestricted issuance of new cryptocurrencies adds supply pressure, which McGlone says compounds the volatility of the BGCI.

Potential Outlook

McGlone warned that the combination of high equity valuations, further Fed tightening, and the BGCI’s heightened volatility could create a “lose‑lose” scenario for digital assets, potentially pressuring prices such as Bitcoin toward lower levels.
