Brazil Electoral Court Suspends Pro‑Bitcoin Candidate Renan Santos’s Campaign and Freezes R$3.3 Million

Brazil’s Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) issued an order on August 31 that suspends the digital campaign of presidential candidate Renan Santos and freezes R$3.3 million (about $640,000 USD) from the public Special Campaign Financing Fund.

Background of the candidate

Renan Santos, 42, became the only presidential contender to publicly promise a national Bitcoin reserve during a speech at Blockchain Rio 2026 on August 13. He also pledged to make Rio de Janeiro “crypto friendly” and to eliminate the Tax on Financial Operations (IOF), describing Brazil’s current crypto regulations as outdated and overly centralized.

Court ruling details

Justice Dias Toffoli barred Santos and his running mate Aroldo Medina from participating in radio, television and podcast debates. The ruling also prohibited 16 of the campaign’s social‑media profiles—registered 12 days after the campaign filing—from carrying paid political advertisements. Violations could incur fines of R$50,000 per ad or debate appearance.

Platforms were ordered to remove the 16 profiles from recommendation algorithms or face a charge of R$10,000 per hour per profile. One undeclared account with 2.4 million followers remained in suggested‑profile feeds, prompting the specific directive.

Impact on campaign financing

The order stops any new disbursements from the FEFC to Santos’s campaign. However, the candidate’s single website and official X account remain active, and street‑level campaigning continues.

Political context

Santos’s Bitcoin‑reserve proposal aligns with similar moves in Latin America, such as El Salvador’s national Bitcoin reserve and Argentina’s pro‑crypto stance under President Javier Milei. The ruling coincided with a profile of Santos in The Economist, which suggested his candidacy could represent a “Milei‑style” moment for Brazil.

Future outlook

The Mission Party, founded in 2025, is fielding 57 congressional candidates alongside Santos. The candidate’s legal team plans to seek an injunction from TSE president Nunes Marques. Brazil’s general election is scheduled for October 4.
