Cardano added to x402 kit for AI agent payments

The official x402 kit now includes Cardano tools for apps and AI agents to pay with ADA and other network tokens, though the facilitator has so far only been tested on pre-production.

Cardano has been incorporated into the official x402 software kit, giving developers the code needed to let applications and AI agents pay for online services with ADA or other Cardano‑issued tokens.

What is the x402 standard?

x402 repurposes the HTTP “402 Payment Required” response into a checkout mechanism built directly into an internet request. A service returns its price and payment instructions, the agent signs a payment, and after verification the requested data or compute is delivered. This enables pay‑per‑use transactions without accounts, card details, or subscriptions.

Cardano’s implementation

Engineers from the Cardano Foundation followed a specification accepted in June, then built client and server software plus a “facilitator” that verifies and submits payments. The initial release supports TypeScript, with Python support planned for a later update.

The facilitator documentation notes that a real transaction was completed on Cardano’s pre‑production network, but it has not yet been run on mainnet or demonstrated commercial‑scale payments.

Industry context

The x402 standard was created by Coinbase in 2025 and contributed to a Linux Foundation‑backed organization whose members include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google and Amazon Web Services. Solana, the XRP Ledger and several Ethereum‑compatible networks already support the standard, and Cardano is now joining that group.

Developers can begin integrating Cardano into x402‑enabled services, though widespread commercial use of ADA for AI‑agent payments remains to be seen.
