Cardano Unlocks AI Agent Payments With x402: ADA Hits 4‑Month High

Cardano has integrated the x402 open HTTP payment standard, enabling applications and autonomous AI agents to settle payments for online services directly in ADA.

What x402 Enables

x402 revives the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, creating a handshake where an AI agent requests a paid resource, receives pricing details, signs a transaction, and a facilitator settles the payment on‑chain. The process eliminates the need for traditional accounts, API keys, or checkout screens.

Implementation on Cardano

Cardano Foundation engineers built the client, server and facilitator components after the network’s specification merged into the official x402 repository in early September. The integration is available as an npm package (@x402/cardano) with TypeScript support and planned Python support.

A test transaction has already been processed on Cardano’s pre‑production network, while mainnet deployment is still pending.

Market Reaction

Following the announcement, ADA rose about 4% in 24 hours, reaching its highest price in four months and breaking a multi‑year resistance level, according to BeInCrypto data.

Rivals such as the XRP Ledger have processed over 1.4 million AI agent transactions via x402, and Coinbase reported more than 100 million x402 payments across Base and Solana.

Outlook

The integration adds new utility for Cardano in the emerging machine‑to‑machine commerce space. Sustained impact will depend on developer adoption once mainnet support is live.
