Circle’s cirBTC Launch Shows Strong Backing but Minimal Market Presence

Circle's wrapped Bitcoin was over‑collateralized at its Aug. 27 snapshot, yet WBTC and cbBTC remain thousands of times larger as Arc becomes the next distribution test.

Circle introduced cirBTC, a tokenized representation of Bitcoin on Ethereum, with a formal institutional framework that includes segregated reserves, a federally supervised custodian, and direct mint‑and‑redeem services for eligible businesses. Despite this structure, the token’s market footprint remains extremely small.

Reserve Backing Confirmed

The Aug. 27 reserve panel reported 40.02450077 cirBTC in circulation backed by 42.5114162 BTC, providing about 106.2 % coverage and a cushion of 2.48691543 BTC across 14 disclosed Bitcoin addresses. This over‑collateralization settled the backing question at that snapshot.

Market Scale Compared to Competitors

CirBTC’s supply of roughly 40 BTC contrasts sharply with the six‑figure supplies of rival wrapped Bitcoin tokens:

  • WBTC: 116,499.2018 tokens (≈2,911 × cirBTC)
  • cbBTC: 98,668.19 tokens (≈2,465 × cirBTC)

Public activity data also highlight the disparity. At the Aug. 29 check, DefiLlama recorded about $110.49 million in 24‑hour WBTC trading volume and $3.12 billion in maximum observed lending exposure, while cbBTC showed $338.55 million in volume and $2.817 billion in lending exposure. CirBTC had no tracked trading volume, liquidity, or transactions on CoinGecko.

Institutional Infrastructure vs. Adoption Gap

Circle’s operating model designates Circle International Bermuda Limited as the legal issuer, Circle National Trust as the custodian, and Circle Mint for issuance to qualified institutions. Direct redemption is limited to eligible businesses, while secondary‑market transfers are open to any holder.

Circle’s broader platform includes the USDC stablecoin (with $73.3 billion in circulation at Q2 end) and the upcoming Arc network, which aims to integrate custody, stablecoin, and wrapped Bitcoin services. However, cirBTC still lacks the dealer, market‑maker, and protocol integrations that have propelled WBTC and cbBTC into deep liquidity pools.

Outlook

The next test for cirBTC will be whether the Arc network and Circle’s distribution experience can attract sufficient institutional demand to generate visible trading, lending, and redemption activity. Until then, the token remains a well‑backed but largely unused representation of Bitcoin.
