Chainalysis‑Led Operation Flags Over 7,700 Accounts in Global Child Abuse Probe

Chainalysis announced that its global initiative, Operation Lighthouse, has identified more than 7,700 suspect accounts tied to child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The multi‑day effort examined 29,120 crypto addresses and digital identifiers associated with over 100 CSAM platforms, forums and distribution networks on both the surface and dark web.

Scope of the Investigation

The operation produced 14,300 investigative leads across 11 cryptocurrency exchanges and payment services, covering activity in 125 countries. Among the flagged individuals were 16 registered sex offenders, as well as personnel from the military, law enforcement, medical and education sectors.

Collaboration and Methodology

Hosted at the National Cyber‑Forensics and Training Alliance in New York, the sprint brought together law‑enforcement agencies, private‑sector partners and specialized nonprofits, including Europol, the UK National Crime Agency, Binance, Coinbase, Block and the Internet Watch Foundation. Participants leveraged on‑chain intelligence to develop leads for subsequent legal actions and case development.

Expected Outcomes

Chainalysis expects the findings to lead to arrests, prosecutions and the disruption of suspect accounts. The initiative builds on prior collaborations between crypto firms and child‑protection organizations aimed at improving intelligence sharing around exploitation‑related crypto activity.

Context and Prior Successes

Blockchain tracing has previously supported CSAM investigations, such as the 2019 takedown of the darknet marketplace “Welcome to Video,” where Bitcoin transaction analysis helped locate the server, identify the administrator, and result in 337 arrests.
