For years, blockchains used the number of engineers contributing code as a key indicator of progress. Hoskinson explained that AI tools now allow individuals with little technical knowledge to produce functional software, eliminating the scarcity that once gave developer counts meaning.

Challenges in Verifying Contributions

Hackathons and code bounties increasingly face difficulties distinguishing genuine human work from AI‑generated output. According to Hoskinson, teams are spending more time verifying authorship rather than advancing projects.

Midnight’s Strategic Shift

The Midnight Foundation has reduced its external developer recruitment and is emphasizing “builders” who can leverage AI tools. Despite this shift, the foundation continues to run three hackathons with a total prize pool of $26,500, including a contest that began on September 1 in Korea.
