Coinbase builds AI‑focused financial accounts with isolated portfolios

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says the exchange is building financial accounts for AI agents, with isolated portfolios and controlled trading access.

Coinbase is developing a dedicated financial account designed for artificial‑intelligence agents. The service, called Coinbase for Agents, lets AI applications trade crypto, derivatives and U.S. equities while keeping their exposure limited to a separate, funded portfolio.

Isolated portfolios for risk control

Users create a distinct portfolio, fund it only with assets they are willing to expose, and assign the AI agent specific permissions. This limits the amount at risk if the agent misinterprets an instruction or places an unexpected order. The platform does not allow agents to withdraw funds to external blockchain addresses, and access can be revoked at any time through security settings.

Supported assets and trading capabilities

Coinbase for Agents currently supports:

  • Spot trading of more than 900 cryptocurrency pairs
  • Eligible U.S. futures contracts
  • S&P 500 equities
  • Portfolio monitoring and conversions between USDC and U.S. dollars

Equity and derivatives access remains subject to customer eligibility and regulatory restrictions.

Upcoming x402 payment protocol

Coinbase is also preparing the x402 payment protocol, which would let AI agents pay for research, data services and computing resources directly within an HTTP request. The protocol has processed over 100 million payments on Base and Solana, but direct agent payments through Coinbase are still listed as “coming soon.”

User responsibility and limitations

Coinbase warns that AI agents can misread instructions, select the wrong trading pair, or stop after previewing an order. Users remain responsible for reviewing and authorizing every trade, transfer or account change made by an agent.

Future outlook

The next milestone is the activation of x402 payments within Coinbase for Agents or a formal product announcement detailing broader spending functions such as cards, bank transfers or recurring bill payments. Until then, the offering provides AI‑connected trading with controlled portfolio access rather than a full autonomous banking solution.
