Coinbase and Moov team up to bring stablecoin infrastructure to US community banks

The partnership will provide stablecoin acceptance, settlement and real-time funding capabilities to over 1,000 community banks and credit unions.

Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has partnered with payments platform Moov to deliver a regulated stablecoin infrastructure to more than 1,000 U.S. community banks and credit unions.

What the partnership delivers

The combined solution will enable participating institutions to accept stablecoin payments, settle transactions and obtain real‑time funding. It also gives businesses and merchants access to custodial accounts hosted by Coinbase.

Targeted use cases

  • Consumer payments using stablecoins
  • Merchant settlement and payouts
  • Access to custodial services for businesses

Context in the broader banking sector

Community banks in the United States typically hold less than $10 billion in assets and include state‑chartered banks and savings‑loan holding companies. Larger banks are also exploring stablecoin technology; for example, U.S. Bank recently completed a live cross‑border payment using its USBDC stablecoin on the Stellar network, and a consortium of major banks announced plans to launch a U.S.‑dollar stablecoin in early 2027.

Non‑bank competition

Non‑bank players are entering the stablecoin space as well. In August, Western Union partnered with Rain to launch a digital wallet and Visa‑branded card that allow users to hold and spend a U.S.‑dollar‑backed stablecoin.
