Consensys to Separate MetaMask from Institutional and Ethereum Infrastructure Units
The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with the existing entity rebranding as MetaMask under CEO Joe Lubin.

Consensys Software Inc., the Ethereum‑focused arm of ConsenSys, announced it will split into two independent companies. The consumer‑facing MetaMask business will be carved out and rebranded as a standalone entity, while the remaining institutional and infrastructure operations will continue under the ConsenSys name.
MetaMask to Become a Standalone Consumer Finance Platform
Joe Lubin will serve as chairman and CEO of the newly named MetaMask company. The focus will shift from a pure wallet to a broader self‑custodial finance platform, covering payments, savings and investing. MetaMask currently reports more than 100 million downloads in roughly 190 countries and has processed trillions of dollars in cumulative transaction volume.
Consensys Infrastructure Unit Remains Dedicated to Ethereum
The Protocols Group will be restructured as a separate ConsenSys company, led by CEO Mike Kriak and President David Cunningham, with Lubin as executive chairman. This unit will concentrate on Ethereum‑level infrastructure, including the Linea zk‑EVM network and the Besu and Teku client suites, targeting institutional adoption.
Strategic Rationale
The split reflects rising demand from financial institutions for tokenization, stablecoins and production‑grade blockchain infrastructure. ConsenSys cites growing interest from firms such as Citi, DTC and BNY Mellon in its infrastructure services.
Recent Product Expansions
- MetaMask launched a U.S. Mastercard‑linked payment card, offering rewards in its mUSD stablecoin.
- In June, MetaMask introduced a Money Account that provides up to 4 % APY on mUSD balances, which can also be used for spending, trading and other on‑chain activities.
Future Outlook
The separation is slated to be official by the end of the year, with the rebranded MetaMask operating independently thereafter. The company did not comment on potential IPO or token launch plans.
