Cronos validators erase transaction history after $75 million Tectonic exploit
The network-wide pause appears to have kept most affected assets on-chain, but users still lack a restart timetable or official accounting.

Cronos has resumed block production after validators rolled back the chain to its state before the Tectonic lending protocol exploit. The network moved from an open‑ended halt to a monitored restart, with blocks now being produced from block 90,896,189 (timestamp 23:49:01 UTC, Aug 30).
Restart details
The chain was restarted on version 1.7.8 using updated mainnet snapshots. Cronos said the network is fully back online, though some protocols, RPC providers, explorers and bridges may need additional time to recover. The team will monitor stability and publish a full post‑mortem.
What triggered the halt
On Aug 30, Cronos halted after detecting an exploit in Tectonic, a decentralized lending protocol on the network. The exploit affected the protocol’s governance token, TONIC, which was allegedly inflated in price and then used as collateral to borrow other assets.
Estimated impact
- On‑chain researcher Weilin Li estimates the exploit affected roughly $75 million worth of assets.
- Only about $6 million was bridged to Ethereum before the halt; the majority of the affected assets remain on Cronos.
- The exact loss, root cause and handling of attacker‑controlled assets have not been officially confirmed.
Responses from the ecosystem
Tectonic advised users not to interact with the protocol until safety could be confirmed. Crypto.com’s CEO Kris Marszalek stated that the company’s app and exchange were unaffected and that security staff were assisting Cronos, though this does not extend to Tectonic depositors.
Next steps
Stakeholders await a detailed post‑mortem that will clarify the final accounting, the fate of the compromised assets, and the timeline for full recovery of connected services.
