Volume rebound after July trough

July saw the lowest spot volume of the year at roughly $429 billion, down from $931.8 billion in January—a 54% decline. In August, spot volume recovered sharply, while derivatives volume also rose to $3.51 trillion after falling below $3.1 trillion the previous month.

Exchange‑level performance

Thirteen of the fourteen tracked exchanges posted higher spot volume in August. Binance led the market with $243.1 billion in spot trades and $1.67 trillion in futures, increasing its spot market share to 47.6% from 43.9% in January. Uniswap was the only exchange with a decline, down 18.7%.

Concentration of activity

The three largest venues accounted for 64.8% of total spot volume and 74.7% of derivatives volume in August.

Price action and institutional interest

Bitcoin gained about 25% during the month, its strongest monthly performance since November 2024. US‑listed Bitcoin ETFs attracted $3.52 billion in net inflows, the highest monthly total for the year.

Outlook

Despite the rebound, spot volume remains about 45% below its January level, and the futures‑to‑spot ratio stays near the higher end of its 2026 range.
