Analyst Eric Crown Abandons Altcoins, Calls 99.9% Worthless

Technical analyst Eric Crown announced that he holds no altcoins and believes that over 99.9% of them are worthless. He explained his stance on a BeInCrypto podcast, noting that his portfolio consists solely of Bitcoin (BTC) and traditional market assets.

Why Crown Cut Altcoin Exposure

Crown said he has observed a near‑total failure rate for altcoins across multiple market cycles, estimating the rate at 99.999% when extended indefinitely. He described the few exceptions as rare and suggested that most investors would be better off holding assets that compound steadily over time.

Critique of the Bitcoin Dominance Chart

The analyst criticized the Bitcoin dominance chart, a tool many traders use to gauge capital flow between Bitcoin and other tokens. Crown argued that the chart has failed to provide useful signals for three consecutive years, noting that dominance rose from roughly 38% in early 2023 to about 66% in mid‑2025 before stabilising near 60%.

He explained that the metric can be misleading because the denominator continuously expands as new tokens launch, while Bitcoin’s supply remains fixed.

Alternative Screening Method

Instead of relying on dominance, Crown uses a two‑step screen: first compare a chosen altcoin to the US dollar, then compare the same altcoin to Bitcoin. This approach helps determine whether the token is truly outperforming Bitcoin rather than merely riding a broader market rally.

He highlighted Hyperliquid (HYPE) as an example of a token that meets both criteria, noting that HYPE ranks 11th by market value and trades around $79.61.

Macro Outlook

Crown said he does not seek an edge from macroeconomic data releases without insider information. He prefers to infer large‑account positioning from price action rather than narrative.
