Ethereum and Bitcoin Rally Together While Their On‑Chain Behaviors Diverge

During a joint price rally, Ethereum holders withdrew 1.4 million ETH from exchanges, while Bitcoin balances on exchanges rose slightly, highlighting a split in inventory trends.

Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC) have both posted strong price gains in August, yet on‑chain data reveals opposite actions by their holders.

Exchange Balances Move in Different Directions

According to analytics firm Santiment, ETH held on exchanges fell from about 7.69 million coins on June 3 to 6.28 million on August 27 – an 18 % reduction in tradable supply. A further 275,000 ETH moved off exchanges after August 19, pushing the on‑exchange amount to its lowest level for the period.

In contrast, BTC balances on exchanges increased by roughly 0.25 % over the same timeframe, keeping holdings near the upper end of their recent range. Bitcoin’s exchange share rose from 6.50 % of total supply on July 28 to about 6.65 %.

Price Gains Occurred While Holdings Shifted

Ethereum’s price rose about 27 % between August 16 and August 27, and overall gained 34.5 % in August. Bitcoin gained 26.5 % in the same month. The withdrawals and deposits occurred while both assets were appreciating, not during declines.

Institutional Fund Flows Mirror the Split

ETF flows over the past 12 weeks show a similar divergence. U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs attracted $1.633 billion, while Bitcoin funds saw net inflows of $173 million. Bitcoin’s fund complex is eight times larger, and its flows were roughly balanced ($5.87 billion in, $5.69 billion out). Ethereum’s flows were largely one‑sided, with net inflows representing 15.51 % of pre‑window assets versus 0.2 % for Bitcoin.

Implications

The contrasting on‑chain inventory trends suggest differing holder sentiment: ETH owners are moving coins off exchanges, while BTC owners are keeping them on‑exchange.
