Quantum‑resistant Layer 1 deadline
The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol Cluster announced the 2029 deadline in its September 7 priorities update and reiterated it during a September 16 AMA on Reddit. The deadline is described as “non‑negotiable” until at least January 2027, when external experts will reassess quantum‑computing progress. The plan assumes a cryptographically relevant quantum computer could appear by 2030, even though most estimates place the threat later.
Frame Transactions (EIP‑8141) and Hegotá
EIP‑8141, known as Frame Transactions, is scheduled for inclusion in the Hegotá upgrade. The design separates transaction validation, execution and gas payment into programmable frames, giving accounts the ability to define their own authentication logic. Privacy and finality research
Privacy work is proceeding alongside post‑quantum efforts. Frame Transactions and the FOCIL design aim to reduce reliance on a single block builder and enable privacy‑preserving validation without embedding a specific privacy system in the protocol. Separate research on faster finality explores decoupled consensus mechanisms that could reduce finality times from minutes toward seconds.
Issuance and governance
Changes to ETH issuance remain unsettled. A proposal (EIP‑8363) to taper issuance and eventually cancel consensus issuance at a defined staking saturation was discussed but not adopted for Hegotá. The Foundation emphasized that core‑protocol changes do not automatically protect wallets, bridges, rollups or other applications, which must also transition away from classical cryptography.
