Dormant Ethereum Whale Moves $37 M to OKX, Realizing Roughly $20 M Loss

Two long‑inactive wallets transferred 14,700 ETH to OKX on Sept. 14, 2026, valued at about $36.9 million, down from an estimated $56.9 million when the coins arrived in 2021.

Two Ethereum wallets that had been inactive for more than a year sent a total of 14,700 ETH to a deposit address on the OKX exchange on Sept. 14, 2026. At the time of the transfer the ether was worth roughly $36.94 million.

Background of the wallets

Both addresses received large inflows in 2021:

  • Wallet 0x8155 received 5,000 ETH on Aug. 19, 2021, when ETH closed near $3,184.
  • Wallet 0x49f1 received 9,700 ETH on Oct. 25, 2021, when ETH closed near $4,220.

On Sept. 14, 2026 each wallet emptied into the same OKX deposit address within about 85 minutes, sending the bulk of their balances in three separate transactions. Small transfers of 1 ETH and 100 ETH appear to be test moves.

Loss calculation

On the dates the ETH arrived, the 14,700 ETH was valued at approximately $56.9 million. At the September 2026 deposit price it was worth about $36.9 million, indicating a loss of roughly $20 million, or about 35 %.

Prior activity and staking

In 2024 the wallets participated in Ethereum staking, sending thousands of ETH to a batch‑deposit contract to launch validators. The staked ETH later returned to the wallets after validator exits, providing some staking rewards, though not enough to offset the price decline.

Related movements

Another 2021 wallet (0x08E8) moved 1,250 ETH to the MAX exchange on Sept. 14, 2026, also incurring a loss of over 20 %.

Current market context

At the time of reporting, ETH trades near $2,465, down about 16 % from its January 2026 level and roughly 49 % below its all‑time high of $4,946 set in August 2025.
