ECB Launches Pontes Platform to Settle Tokenized Assets with Central Bank Money

The European Central Bank has launched Pontes, giving banks a new route to settle tokenized assets in central bank money. The rollout could remove one of the biggest obstacles to institutional blockchain adoption in Europe: connecting crypto-style market infrastructure with legally final central-bank settlement.

The European Central Bank (ECB) activated Pontes, a wholesale settlement platform, on September 21, 2026. Pontes links banks and private distributed‑ledger networks to the Eurosystem’s TARGET payment infrastructure, allowing tokenized securities to be settled with central‑bank money.

How Pontes Works

Pontes functions as an interoperability layer rather than a separate crypto network. Participants can settle tokenized cash on the Eurosystem DLT platform or via T2, the real‑time gross settlement system. Final settlement in central‑bank money provides the legal certainty required by institutional markets.

Implications for Institutional Tokenization

By offering the eurozone’s safest settlement asset for tokenized bonds, funds and other securities, Pontes removes a key friction point: the need to rely on stablecoins or private payment instruments for cash settlement. The ECB’s research estimates the value of tokenized traditional assets on public blockchains at about $43.6 billion (€38 billion) as of February 2026, up from $8.5 billion (€7.4 billion) at the start of 2024.

Future Plans and the Appia Initiative

The initial service is limited, but the ECB intends to extend operating hours and add features over time. Lessons from Pontes will feed into the Appia initiative, which aims to create an integrated European tokenized‑finance system by 2028.

Distinction from the Retail Digital Euro

Pontes should not be confused with the consumer‑facing digital euro, which is slated for a 12‑month pilot in the second half of 2027 involving 36 payment providers. The retail digital euro will use a centralized settlement platform and is dependent on EU legislation, with potential issuance targeted for 2029.
