Fairlead Strategies Founder Says Bitcoin's Rally Has More Room Than Gold's
Fairlead Strategies founder Katie Stockton says Bitcoin's breakout has more room to run than gold's rally, citing differences in how each asset bottomed and their momentum patterns.
Fairlead Strategies founder Katie Stockton told CNBC’s “The Exchange” that Bitcoin (BTC) has more upside potential than gold at the moment. She highlighted the distinct ways the two assets formed their recent bases and the momentum each shows.
Bitcoin’s Base and Breakout
Stockton said Bitcoin entered a basing phase in June, retested that level in July, and is now breaking out. The cryptocurrency cleared its 200‑day moving average, a level she described as a key hurdle since May. She noted strong short‑term momentum and improving intermediate‑term momentum after the breakout, with Bitcoin reaching around $81,000 during the week.
Gold’s Countertrend Rally
In contrast, Stockton observed that gold’s intermediate‑term downtrend began later than Bitcoin’s, making its current rise a countertrend rally rather than a full trend reversal. She expects gold to encounter resistance sooner, with the metal trading near $4,636 per ounce.
Why Bitcoin May Outrun Gold
- Bitcoin’s longer oversold period followed a prolonged decline, allowing a more complete base.
- Gold’s decline was shorter, giving it less room for an extended rebound.
- Bitcoin’s breakout is confirmed by immediate follow‑through, while gold’s rally appears more like a pause within a corrective phase.
Current Prices
At the time of reporting, Bitcoin was trading near $78,400, while gold was around $4,636 an ounce.
Outlook
Stockton’s view positions her among the more optimistic analysts on Bitcoin, suggesting the cryptocurrency’s rally could continue longer before hitting resistance, whereas gold’s advance may be nearing its limit.
