FBI Links Bitcoin Transactions to Alleged Darknet Opioid Operation

Federal authorities have charged two brothers from Jacksonville, Florida, accusing them of operating a darknet narcotics vendor that distributed counterfeit pills containing potent nitazene compounds. The indictment alleges the operation used Bitcoin payments traced from three major darknet marketplaces.

Charges and Alleged Activities

The brothers, identified as Vladislav (35) and Stanislav Chernyshov (30), face a federal conspiracy charge for distributing nitazenes. Prosecutors say the alleged vendor, operating under the name “BarbaraWhite,” sold counterfeit oxycodone pills marked as “fent‑free” but containing nitazenes such as protonitazene and metonitazene.

Blockchain Investigation

Investigators employed blockchain analytics, postal records, undercover purchases, and surveillance to link Bitcoin wallets to the brothers. The analysis, conducted with Chainalysis’s Reactor software, identified addresses that received roughly $220,000 from the darknet markets Nemesis, Bohemia and Abacus, and subsequently sent about $230,000 to other accounts.

• ~$230,000 transferred to additional wallets, including a postage provider, another vendor, and a China‑based chemical supplier (≈ $7,210 to the supplier).

Public Health Impact

The alleged sales are linked to at least 12 overdoses across the United States, including three fatalities. A fatal overdose in Arlington, Virginia, triggered the investigation after the victim received a parcel tied to a BarbaraWhite purchase.

Legal Proceedings

The case was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia on September 2. If convicted, each brother could face a minimum of 20 years in prison. The defendants retain the presumption of innocence, and no trial date has been set.
