Galaxy Says Bitcoin Needs $82,470 Reclaim to Confirm Bear-Market End
Galaxy Research highlights Bitcoin’s 50‑week moving average near $82,470 as the most reliable signal for confirming the end of the current bear market.

Galaxy Research has identified Bitcoin’s 50‑week moving average, currently around $82,470, as the key level traders are watching to gauge whether the ongoing bear market has truly ended.
Historical reliability of the 50‑week reclaim
The study examined every completed Bitcoin bear market since 2011 that met a mechanical definition of a 50% drawdown lasting at least 90 days. Across six completed cycles, the 50‑week moving average was reclaimed 13 times, and 11 of those reclaims held without the price setting a lower closing low.
Comparison with shorter‑term signals
While the 50‑day moving average provides quicker signals, it produced 43 false reclaims out of 106 across the same periods, and the first 50‑day reclaim failed in every bear market studied. By contrast, the 50‑week reclaim that held lasted 945 days.
Timing and magnitude of past reclaims
In the three longer bear markets, the first successful 50‑week reclaim occurred 130–284 days after the low, after Bitcoin had already rallied 63%–80%. The 2011 cycle saw a reclaim just 51 days after the bottom, following a 237% gain.
Current market context
As of August 22, Bitcoin trades around $77,190, roughly 30% above its June 30 low and about 6% below the 50‑week average. A weekly close above $82,000 would add weight to the argument that the June low marked the bottom, according to Galaxy’s analysis.
Conclusion
While recent price action is encouraging, Galaxy Research suggests that a confirmed weekly close above the $82,470 level is needed for stronger historical confirmation that the bear market has ended.
