Gen Z Shows Boomer‑Style Conservatism in Crypto‑Exchange Investing

Binance Research data shows Gen Z investors favor unleveraged ETFs, trade less frequently, and avoid leveraged products, mirroring older generations’ risk‑averse habits.

Binance Research’s August 12 report reveals that Generation Z users on the exchange display the lowest turnover and the most conservative portfolio choices among working‑age cohorts. While the crypto‑native image suggests a penchant for high‑risk trades, the data shows a clear preference for traditional, low‑leverage assets.

ETF dominance in Gen Z equity activity

ETF trading accounted for 25 % of Gen Z’s direct‑equity volume in early August, up from 14.6 % in June. Unleveraged ETFs made up 21.9 % of net equity inflows in July, while the share of individual‑stock purchases fell to 74.2 %.

Large, steady purchases of dividend and semiconductor funds

Among accounts that never sold, the biggest average purchase was Schwab’s US Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) at $16,567, followed by Broadcom at $12,370. Smaller purchases included Tesla ($633) and Nvidia ($514) in tokenized bStocks.

Higher accumulation rates than older cohorts

About 76 % of Gen Z bStocks accounts were net accumulators, the highest share of any generation, and 77 % of direct‑equity accounts added more than they sold. By contrast, only 68 % of Baby Boomers were net accumulators in direct equities.

Reduced use of leveraged and perpetual products

Gen Z made an average of 13 TradFi‑perpetual trades per month, the lowest among the age groups studied. Only 14 % of Gen Z perpetual accounts qualified as high‑frequency, and 88.2 % recorded no activity in leveraged or inverse ETFs.

Emerging‑market users driving the trend

Roughly 44 % of Binance’s direct‑stock and bStocks users are Gen Z, many from emerging markets where traditional brokerage access is limited. About 13 % of direct‑stock users in these regions hold less than $2,000 in equity assets.

Overall, Gen Z’s behavior on Binance blends crypto‑exchange convenience with a surprisingly traditional, low‑risk investment approach.
