Grayscale’s Zcash ETF Reaches $1 Billion in Assets, Mostly From Price Gains

Grayscale says its Zcash exchange‑traded fund (ETF) has passed $1 billion in assets one month after listing, but its flow data shows ZEC’s price did most of the work.

Grayscale’s Zcash ETF (ticker ZCSH) announced that its net assets have crossed the $1 billion mark less than a month after debuting on NYSE Arca. While the milestone is real, the majority of the fund’s value stems from the recent rise in Zcash (ZEC) price rather than fresh investor cash.

Asset growth versus inflows

Data from Sosovalue shows that as of September 24 the fund held $1 billion in net assets, but cumulative net inflows were only $306.12 million. In other words, less than 30 % of the total value represents new money.

Sources of the existing value

  • The ETF is a rebranded version of the Grayscale Zcash Trust, created in October 2017, and therefore arrived on the exchange already holding a substantial amount of ZEC.
  • ZEC’s price has roughly doubled since the fund’s launch, climbing to about $1,540, which amplified the value of the existing holdings.

In‑kind swap contribution

DCG International Investments, Grayscale’s parent, executed an in‑kind swap on September 8, delivering approximately 85,705 ZEC in exchange for about $100 million of ZCSH shares. Removing this transaction reduces the amount of external cash inflow to roughly $200 million of the $1 billion headline figure.

Market reaction and commentary

Recent inflows remain positive, with a single session bringing $46.6 million into the fund. The rally in ZEC also coincided with 21shares listing Europe’s first ZEC exchange‑traded product, shortly after ZEC breached $1,600.

Industry voices are split: Alliance co‑founder Qiao Wang highlighted ZEC’s adaptability to privacy and quantum‑computing challenges, while F2Pool co‑founder Chun Wang described the price surge as narrative‑driven and questioned the token’s reward and security model.

Upcoming 3‑for‑1 forward split

Grayscale will implement a 3‑for‑1 forward split effective before the market opens on September 30. The split will reduce the net asset value per share to roughly one‑third while tripling the share count, aiming to make the ETF more accessible to smaller investors.
