Bitmine could reach 5% Ethereum ownership through staking rewards
A two-year model needs about 74% reward retention with flat ETH supply, rising to 96.5% at 0.5% annual supply growth.

Bitmine, a Nasdaq‑listed treasury company, continues to buy Ethereum while its growing stake of staked ETH may soon make additional purchases unnecessary to hit its publicly stated goal of owning 5% of the network.
Recent purchases and current holdings
In the week ending Aug. 30 the firm acquired 53,501 ETH, bringing its total balance to roughly 5.9 million tokens. On Sept. 1 blockchain data indicated an additional acquisition of about 51,000 ETH (≈ $126 million) from FalconX and BitGo, which would raise the holding to roughly 5.95 million ETH.
Staking rewards as an acquisition engine
Bitmine had 5,067,309 ETH staked at a 7‑day annualized yield of 2.67%. Assuming that yield remains constant, the modeled annual reward would be about 135,000 ETH. With a circulating supply of 120.7 million ETH, a 5% share requires roughly 6.035 million ETH. The shortfall of ~134,000 ETH is essentially equal to one year of staking rewards, meaning that retaining nearly all rewards could close the gap without further market purchases.
Impact of Ethereum supply growth
If the supply expands, the required holdings increase. On Sept. 5 the supply was about 122.02 million ETH, reducing Bitmine’s ownership to ~4.84% and widening the shortfall to ~200,000 ETH. A two‑year model shows the following reward‑retention needs to reach 5%:
- ‑0.5% annual supply change: ~51% retention
- 0% supply change: ~74% retention
- +0.5% supply change: ~96.5% retention
- +1.0% supply change: ~119% retention (unachievable without purchases)
Capital‑allocation decisions
Bitmine periodically converts a portion of its ETH‑denominated staking rewards to US dollars to fund operations, preferred‑stock dividends, and other obligations. The proportion of rewards retained versus sold will directly affect the speed at which the 5% target is achieved.
What investors should monitor
Future disclosures on the amount of staking rewards kept on the balance sheet, changes in Ethereum’s supply growth, and any additional market purchases will be key indicators of Bitmine’s progress toward its ownership goal.
