Poland's State Refiner Loses $424 Million in Venezuela Oil Deal After USDT Payments
Orlen prepaid $230M for Venezuelan crude. The dollars became USDT on USB drives in Caracas, and the oil never sailed.
Poland’s state‑controlled oil refiner Orlen suffered a massive loss after attempting to purchase Venezuelan crude using Tether (USDT). The transaction, worth roughly $424 million, ended with no oil delivered and several former executives facing criminal charges.
Deal Originated on a Yacht
In November 2023, during a Formula 1 weekend in Abu Dhabi, the head of Orlen Trading Switzerland met a 25‑year‑old trader from Hong Kong on a yacht. The parties signed an agreement on 29 November to buy 6 million barrels of Venezuela’s Merey 16 heavy crude for $345 million.
Payment Structure and Use of USDT
Within five days Orlen’s Swiss unit wired $230 million without any collateral or bank guarantee. Because U.S. sanctions had cut off PDVSA from the dollar banking system, the cash was converted into USDT, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, and transferred through brokers in Dubai. More than $132 million in USDT was then delivered in Caracas via USB drives handed over in hotels and restaurants.
Oil Never Arrived
Six chartered tankers waited off Venezuela for months but left empty or were redirected to other buyers. The shipping costs alone amounted to about $72 million. PDVSA later stated it never received any payment and therefore allocated no cargoes to Orlen.
Financial Fallout
One conversion of $135 million into USDT yielded only $85 million, leaving $50 million stuck in a UAE court. Polish prosecutors charged three former Orlen executives on 7 August with failing to protect assets worth 1.5 billion zloty (approximately $378 million). The charges carry potential prison sentences of up to 25 years.
