Hyperliquid launches AQAv2 to channel USDC yield into HYPE token buybacks
Hyperliquid’s new AQAv2 framework routes the yield from its USDC reserves into automatic buybacks and burns of the HYPE token, with Circle and Coinbase handling the underlying infrastructure.

Hyperliquid activated its Aligned Quote Asset v2 (AQAv2) upgrade, a mechanism that directs the majority of yield generated by its USDC reserves toward buying and burning its native HYPE token.
Validator approval and yield allocation
The AQAv2 framework received 69.08% support from Hyperliquid validators. It extends an “aligned” status to stablecoins used on the platform, beginning with USDC, and earmarks roughly 90% of the reserve yield for HYPE buybacks after cost adjustments.
Scale of USDC reserves and expected funding
Hyperliquid holds an estimated $5 billion to $5.5 billion in USDC. The yield‑sharing arrangement is projected to generate $135 million to $160 million per year for HYPE buybacks, adding to about $771 million already sourced from trading‑fee buybacks.
Circle and Coinbase’s role
Following a May agreement that retired Hyperliquid’s USDH stablecoin, Circle and Coinbase now manage the USDC treasury. Coinbase acts as the official treasury deployer, while Circle provides technical deployment and cross‑chain infrastructure, including its Cross‑Chain Transfer Protocol. Circle also pledged to stake 500,000 HYPE tokens as it seeks validator status.
Existing buyback activity
The Hyperliquid Assistance Fund has spent roughly $1.1 billion to acquire 45.07 million HYPE tokens, averaging about $24.90 per token. A recent purchase added 26,000 HYPE for $1.5 million at around $60 each. A $30 million repurchase authorization formalizes the program.
Risks and upcoming test
The AQAv2 payout depends on USDC interest rates; a decline in yields would reduce the buyback contribution, though trading‑fee buybacks would continue. Analysts also note potential margin impacts for Circle and Coinbase as more USDC volume is directed to HYPE buybacks. The first AQAv2 payment is scheduled for October 3, marking the initial real‑world test of the mechanism.
