IBM Links Banks to Swift’s Blockchain Ledger for Tokenized Deposits

IBM Digital Asset Haven can now connect financial institutions to Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger through a beta integration. Banks can instruct tokenized-deposit transactions using existing ISO 20022 payment messages. Swift’s ledger is already being tested by 17 first‑mover institutions, while IBM is also adding an on‑premises version of Digital Asset Haven.

IBM has introduced a beta integration that lets banks interact with Swift’s blockchain‑based shared ledger using the ISO 20022 payment‑message format they already employ. The move aims to reduce a key barrier to institutional blockchain adoption – the need to overhaul existing compliance, messaging and operational systems.

How the Integration Works

The new IBM adapter enables banks to send instructions for tokenized‑deposit transactions directly to Swift’s ledger without requiring blockchain‑specific interfaces. This preserves the familiar ISO 20022 messaging workflow while allowing deposits to be tokenized on a distributed ledger.

Current Testing and Deployment

Swift’s shared ledger, designed for bank‑issued tokenized deposits, is being tested by 17 early‑adopter institutions. The ledger connects more than 12,500 financial institutions across over 200 markets, supporting 24/7 transaction processing before final settlement.

On‑Premises Option for Regulated Banks

IBM is also releasing an on‑premises beta version of its Digital Asset Haven platform. Hosted on IBM Z and LinuxONE infrastructure, this version allows banks to run the digital‑asset platform within their own data centers, offering greater control for heavily regulated environments.

Implications for the Banking Sector

Tokenized deposits are emerging as a regulated alternative to stablecoins, providing programmable settlement benefits while remaining liabilities of commercial banks. By keeping ISO 20022 messaging and existing compliance processes on top of the blockchain layer, IBM and Swift aim to make the technology adoption process operationally familiar for banks.
