The raid was part of an investigation into alleged electricity theft from a nearby hydroelectric system and potential money‑laundering activity.

Operation details

Authorities discovered a secluded building equipped with about 300 specialized computers, eight satellite antennas, a pedestal transformer and roughly 80 medium‑voltage terminals. The site was located about two kilometres from the nearest village along a lightly travelled road in Puebla’s Sierra Norte region. Residents reported that the equipment’s mechanical noise could be heard from a kilometre away.

Investigative focus

The primary concern is whether the farm drew power without authorization from infrastructure linked to the Nuevo Necaxa hydroelectric dam. Officials have not released measurements of electricity consumption or confirmed any illegal connection. The inquiry also examines whether any cryptocurrency generated at the site was used to launder illicit proceeds.

Cryptocurrency mining is not prohibited in Mexico; the criminal investigation centers on the source of electricity and possible financial crimes.
