Monad Proposes Wallet Upgrade to Separate Addresses from Keys

Monad has introduced a design that separates a wallet’s permanent address from the authentication credentials used to control it. The proposal aims to enable key rotation, social recovery, passkey support and post‑quantum security while keeping the same address and assets.

Key Design Elements

The core idea is to treat the account identifier as immutable and allow multiple, interchangeable authorization methods. Users could add, replace or retire credentials such as private keys, passkeys stored on devices, or future post‑quantum schemes without creating a new address.

Recovery and Multi‑Party Control

• Lost private keys could be recovered through a pre‑configured recovery condition, for example two trusted parties jointly installing a replacement credential.
• The same structure could enable a transition to multisignature control without transferring tokens, NFTs or other assets.

Post‑Quantum Readiness

Quantum‑capable computers could threaten current digital signature algorithms. Monad’s approach would let an account install a post‑quantum authentication method while retaining its existing address, avoiding the need to move funds to a new wallet.

Implementation Status

The proposal is at an early design stage. Researchers Kushal Babel and Jan Camenisch have outlined the architecture, but a detailed technical specification and client implementation are still required. Monad’s formal improvement process mandates progression through draft, review, last call and final stages before any protocol change can be adopted.

Context Within Monad’s Ecosystem

Monad launched its mainnet in November 2025 with the MON token and Ethereum‑compatible smart contract support. Since then, the network has seen infrastructure growth, including the Nitro accelerator and MetaMask’s Money Account product on Monad.

Potential Impact

If adopted, the upgrade could simplify security migrations for users and developers, reduce operational overhead of address changes, and provide a pathway to future‑proof authentication methods.
