Mystery Bitcoin Burn: Why an Early Adopter Sent and Destroyed $1 Million in BTC
An almost dormant Bitcoin wallet moved 20 BTC through a large custodian, got it back almost unchanged, and then sent the coins to an unspendable address, sparking speculation about the motives of an early Bitcoin holder.

An anonymous Bitcoin early adopter transferred roughly $1 million worth of BTC (20.00010537 BTC) to a large centralized custodian in March, received almost the same amount back three weeks later, and then burned the coins in May by sending them to an unspendable address.
Wallet activity after 12 years of dormancy
The wallet had been inactive for about 12 years before the March transaction. It sent the full balance to what appears to be a custodian deposit address, received 20.00006037 BTC back (a difference of about 4,500 satoshis, roughly $3), and the returned funds were split into three withdrawals of 7 BTC, 7 BTC, and 6.00006037 BTC over three consecutive days.
Pattern of similar burns
Blockchain analysis identified five wallets that later sent their Bitcoin to the same unspendable address. All five were funded on the same day in April 2014, each moved a similar dollar‑equivalent amount to a large exchange, and operated on a rotational basis. Chainalysis traced most of the funds back to the collapsed Mt. Gox exchange, suggesting early‑adopter ownership.
Repeated $10,400‑sized deposits
One of the five wallets made 60 deposits to the same custodian between 2022 and 2024, totaling 19.6 BTC. Despite Bitcoin’s price quadrupling, 58 of those deposits were within 10 % of $10,400 at the time of each transfer, indicating a possible fixed‑dollar liquidation strategy.
Unclear motive for the burn
Several hypotheses have been proposed: testing an old wallet or custody setup, tax or compliance considerations, privacy‑enhancing moves, or a symbolic act to reduce Bitcoin’s supply. None fully explain the round‑trip through the custodian followed by the deliberate burn.
Analysts’ stance
Both blockchain analysts and the custodian remain unidentified. Chainalysis acknowledges the lack of a clear explanation for why the owner moved a long‑dormant stash through a custodian, retrieved it, and then destroyed it.
