Ethereum Upgrade Proposes Batch Transactions, Paymaster Fees, and Key Rotation

Vitalik Buterin released an updated Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP‑8141) that is slated for inclusion in the upcoming Hegotá upgrade. The draft introduces several changes to how wallets sign, batch, and pay for transactions on Ethereum.

Batching Up to 64 Actions

Current Ethereum transactions perform a single action, such as sending funds or approving a token. EIP‑8141 allows a single transaction to contain up to 64 ordered steps. The entire batch succeeds or fails as a unit, eliminating cases where an approval succeeds but a subsequent swap does not. This enables one‑click token approvals and swaps, and can consolidate onboarding flows into a single user confirmation.

Key Rotation and Seed Phrase Alternatives

The proposal decouples an account from its original private key, allowing wallets to rotate keys or restore access via a second device or trusted contact. The private key remains, but users no longer need to rely on a physical 12‑word seed phrase for recovery.

Paymasters for Gas Fees

EIP‑8141 introduces “paymasters,” entities that can cover transaction fees on behalf of users. This lets new users interact with dApps without first acquiring ETH, with apps absorbing the gas cost as a customer‑acquisition expense.

Signature Scheme Expansion

The draft adds support for the P256 signature scheme, which underlies passkeys and hardware security chips. While not a full quantum‑resistant solution, the change is positioned as a step toward post‑quantum cryptography.

Timeline and Market Context

Client teams have not set a definitive activation date for the upgrade. The related “Glamsterdam” gas‑limit increase is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. At the time of reporting, Ethereum (ETH) was trading around $2,512, roughly 49 % higher over the preceding 90 days.
