ICE Partners with Tzero to Build Infrastructure for Tokenized NYSE Stocks

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) has engaged Tzero to develop the regulated blockchain framework for a 24/7 digital trading platform that would tokenise NYSE‑listed securities, pending SEC approval.

Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), announced a partnership with blockchain firm Tzero to create the regulated infrastructure needed to move NYSE‑listed equities onto a blockchain‑based platform.

Design partnership and technology licensing

Tzero will serve as a premier design partner for the digital transfer‑agent and broker‑dealer components of ICE’s planned NYSE‑affiliated Digital Trading Platform. The agreement also includes a license to Tzero’s blockchain patent portfolio, which ICE says covers 23 patent families and 103 individual patents covering compliance‑controlled transfers, upgradeable smart contracts, corporate actions and broker‑dealer identity integration.

Features of the proposed digital platform

The platform is intended to enable 24/7 trading, instant settlement, fractional shares, dollar‑denominated orders and stablecoin funding across multiple blockchains. Tokenised shares would retain fungibility with traditional securities and preserve dividend and voting rights.

Regulatory hurdle

Launch of the platform requires approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. ICE must demonstrate that its transfer agents, broker‑dealers, blockchain systems and clearing mechanisms can operate within existing securities regulations.

Broader ecosystem

ICE’s tokenisation strategy also involves other partners: a stake in crypto exchange OKX, a designation of Securitize as the first digital transfer agent eligible to mint blockchain‑native securities for the platform, and interest from Wall Street broker‑dealer Muriel Siebert & Co., which has selected Tzero for its own tokenised securities initiatives.

Next steps

ICE has not disclosed the financial terms of its investment in Tzero or the specific blockchains that will be used initially. The partnership will also explore whether tokenised assets could serve as collateral at ICE clearing houses, though this remains under study.
