Owning a Whole Bitcoin Is 70 Times Rarer Than Being a Millionaire

River data shows a whole bitcoin is rarer to own than being a millionaire worldwide.

According to estimates from Bitcoin financial services firm River, roughly 825,000 people worldwide own at least one whole Bitcoin (BTC). This figure is far smaller than the global millionaire population, which is estimated at about 57.5 million people.

Methodology Behind the Estimate

River derived its numbers from the public Bitcoin blockchain, which records addresses rather than individual owners. While about 972,000 addresses hold at least one Bitcoin, many of these belong to corporate treasuries, governments, exchange‑traded funds, and exchanges. To account for custodial addresses that represent multiple retail users, River applied ownership patterns observed on the blockchain to estimate the number of actual individuals, arriving at a plausible range of 600,000 to 1 million whole‑coin owners.

Rarity Compared to Millionaire Status

Dividing the 57.5 million millionaires by the estimated 825,000 whole‑Bitcoin owners yields a ratio of roughly 70 to 1. In probability terms, owning a full Bitcoin is about a 1‑in‑10,000 chance for a person worldwide, whereas becoming a millionaire is about a 1‑in‑143 chance.

Supply Constraints and Future Outlook

Bitcoin’s total supply is capped at 21 million coins, with approximately 20.1 million already mined. This fixed supply limits the potential growth of the whole‑coin ownership tier, unlike the millionaire population, which can expand as asset values rise. Institutional demand, including spot Bitcoin ETFs and corporate treasury purchases, has already increased the number of Bitcoin holders with large balances, further tightening the pool of individuals who can own a full coin.

Current Market Context

At the time of reporting, Bitcoin was trading near $79,134, down 1.96 % over 24 hours, giving the mined supply a market value of roughly $1.59 trillion. The high price contributes to the thinness of ownership tiers above one BTC.
