Robinhood Engineers Charged with Insider Trading Using Hyperliquid Futures

Two Robinhood engineers allegedly turned confidential listing information into personal trades on Hyperliquid, earning over $50,000 each and now face commodities fraud and wire fraud charges.

Federal prosecutors have indicted two Robinhood engineers, Hefu Chai and Huaisong Xiang, for allegedly using non‑public information about upcoming cryptocurrency listings to trade perpetual futures on the Hyperliquid decentralized exchange.

Alleged Misuse of Confidential Listing Plans

According to the indictment, the engineers had access to Robinhood’s internal calendar that indicated which tokens would be added to the Robinhood Crypto platform in 2025 and 2026. The complaint alleges they repeatedly bought perpetual futures tied to those tokens on Hyperliquid before the listings were publicly announced.

Trading on a Decentralized Exchange

Hyperliquid offers perpetual futures, a type of derivative that allows traders to speculate on price movements without owning the underlying asset and without an expiration date. Prosecutors say the engineers leveraged their insider knowledge to open positions on this separate platform, then profited once Robinhood’s announcements caused price movements.

Financial Gains and Charges

The indictment states each engineer earned more than $50,000 from the trades. Both face one count of violating the Commodity Exchange Act (maximum 10 years imprisonment) and one count of wire fraud (maximum 20 years imprisonment).

Legal Context

U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald emphasized that misappropriating confidential corporate information for personal gain in the derivatives market is illegal, regardless of the trading venue. The case underscores ongoing regulatory scrutiny of insider trading in the cryptocurrency sector.
