On‑chain Real‑World Assets Hit $34.18 B, Yet Only 12% Used in DeFi

On‑chain tokenized assets grew 85.2% YTD to $34.18 B, driven by bonds and a 390.4% surge in tokenized equities, but roughly 88% of the value remains outside DeFi applications.

On‑chain real‑world assets (RWAs) reached $34.18 billion as of September 15, 2026, marking an 85.2% increase since the start of the year. Despite this growth, only about 12% of the tracked tokenized capital is deployed in on‑chain financial applications.

Asset Category Breakdown

Bonds and money‑market funds remain the largest segment, accounting for $18.29 billion of the total on‑chain RWA value. Tokenized equities grew the fastest, rising 390.4% YTD to $4.43 billion and expanding their market share from 4.9% to 13.0%.

  • Gold and commodities: +46.6% YTD
  • Private credit: +43.6% YTD
  • Real estate: +17.9% YTD

Utilization Metrics

Binance Research introduced two ratios to assess tokenization progress:

  • Programmable Asset Ratio (PAR) – tokenized value versus the size of the underlying market.
  • Capital Activation Rate (CAR) – proportion of eligible tokenized value deployed in liquidity pools, lending markets, collateral systems, and other verified on‑chain applications.

The overall CAR stands at roughly 12%, meaning about $12 of every $100 of qualified tokenized assets is active in DeFi. Utilization varies by asset type: private credit shows a CAR of 49.67%, while equity CAR rose from 1.95% at the start of the year to 7.54% by mid‑September.

Equity DeFi Activity

Within tokenized equities, liquidity pools account for 65.4% of deployed value and lending for 28.1%, together representing 93.5% of the equity DeFi total.

Regulatory Developments

On September 17, the U.S. SEC issued a temporary Innovation Exemption allowing limited on‑chain trading of tokenized National Market System (NMS) stocks on qualifying permissioned venues. The framework imposes voting, dividend, and anti‑fraud requirements and is open for public comment.

Institutional Adoption

DTCC announced that Oasis Pro Markets joined its Fund/SERV platform, marking the first tokenization member for a system that processes over 85% of U.S. mutual‑fund transactions. The DTC tokenization service is slated for an October 2026 launch.

Aave launched the Horizon RWA credit hub in August 2025, and by February 2026 deposits exceeded $440 million. Aave plans a dedicated RWA credit hub on Avalanche for institutional borrowers.

Future Outlook

Binance Research modeled three 2030 scenarios for tokenized equity value, with a base case of $349 billion and a corresponding PAR of 0.23%. Raising equity CAR from 10% to 20% in that scenario would double deployed capital to nearly $70 billion without additional token supply, highlighting the impact of activation on market depth.
