S&P Global to Acquire OpenZeppelin in On‑chain Risk Push

The smart contract security firm will retain its name and audit team as S&P expands from financial risk assessments into on‑chain technology risk.

S&P Global announced that it will acquire OpenZeppelin, the leading provider of smart‑contract audits and open‑source developer libraries. OpenZeppelin will continue to operate under its own name and retain its existing audit team, reporting to S&P Global Ratings president Yann Le Pallec.

Strategic rationale

The acquisition moves S&P Global deeper into the code layer that underpins stablecoins, tokenized funds and DeFi protocols. By adding OpenZeppelin’s security expertise, S&P aims to broaden its risk‑assessment capabilities to include on‑chain technology and to develop new security benchmarks.

About OpenZeppelin

Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin offers security assessments, secure development services, and the widely used OpenZeppelin Contracts library. The library provides audited implementations of common standards such as ERC token standards for Ethereum and other EVM‑compatible blockchains. According to S&P, the contracts underpin more than $37 trillion in value transferred.

OpenZeppelin’s audit service has completed over 900 engagements for clients that include Uniswap, Aave, Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation and the DTCC. The firm reports that its security work has identified more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before production.

Future of OpenZeppelin tools

OpenZeppelin confirmed that its open‑source contracts and tools will remain free and publicly maintained on GitHub. The Defender platform, which bundled code‑audit‑deploy‑monitor capabilities, will cease new sign‑ups on June 30 2025 and will be fully shut down on July 1 2026. Users are directed to migrate to open‑source alternatives such as OpenZeppelin Monitor and Relayer.

Implications for the crypto ecosystem

If the deal closes, DeFi projects that contract OpenZeppelin for security work will be dealing with a business unit owned by a traditional financial‑data firm. S&P Global Ratings already evaluates crypto‑related financial risks, having adjusted its stability rating for Tether’s USDT in late 2025.
