Solana launches Alpenglow consensus upgrade on testnet as SOL nears January highs

Solana has begun rolling out Alpenglow on testnet, moving its planned blockchain consensus overhaul into a public testing environment.

Solana has started testing its Alpenglow consensus upgrade on a public testnet, marking the first phase of a major overhaul aimed at dramatically reducing block finality time.

Alpenglow consensus design

The new consensus layer targets finality of roughly 150 ms, a steep drop from the current 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT. Alpenglow keeps the Solana Virtual Machine, transaction format, programs and fee structure unchanged.

Votor voting mechanism

Phase 1 introduces Votor, which replaces on‑chain vote transactions with direct validator‑to‑validator votes. These votes are aggregated into certificates that can finalize a block in one or two voting rounds, cutting the wait for an irreversible transaction by about 99%.

Future Rotor component

A later phase will add Rotor, a replacement for Turbine, the system that distributes block data across the network. Rotor is scheduled for a separate rollout, leaving Votor and faster finality as the immediate focus.

Testing and deployment timeline

Developer Anza, behind Solana’s Agave validator software, confirmed that the testnet is entering the rollout process, with subsequent deployments planned for devnet and eventually mainnet‑beta. Validators and infrastructure providers must adjust systems that stream blocks, track votes, or rely on Solana’s existing commitment structure.

Recent performance upgrades

Earlier this month Solana activated Transaction V1, increasing the maximum transaction size to 4,096 bytes from 1,232 bytes. The network’s slot‑time target has also been reduced from 400 ms toward 200 ms.

Market context

SOL is trading around $117, near its strongest level since late January, after reaching almost $120 earlier in the week. The token has gained roughly 25 % over the past month.

Real‑world assets on Solana reached about $4.6 billion in early September, up from $4 billion in August. Decentralized exchanges on Solana recorded approximately 208 million spot trades in the week ending September 13, comparable to major equity exchanges.

Jupiter alone accounted for over 80 million trades in September, a 38 % increase from the prior month.

Outlook

The testnet rollout gives validators and infrastructure providers a broad environment to evaluate Alpenglow before it moves to devnet and mainnet, supporting Solana’s expanding trading and tokenized‑asset ecosystem.
