Swedish tax officials have imposed back taxes and penalties totaling about 540 million Swedish kronor ($56.5 million) on six cryptocurrency mining firms operating in Boden. The enforcement follows a multi‑year audit that uncovered misleading corporate structures used to claim tax benefits intended for standard data‑processing centers.

Audit Reveals Systemic Tax Evasion

The Swedish Tax Agency (STA) concluded that the firms created complex arrangements to hide active mining activities, allowing them to unlawfully obtain state tax relief. STA intelligence head Patrik Lillqvist described the practice as “stealing from society.”

Legal Outcomes and Appeals

Lower courts, including the Administrative Court and the Court of Appeal, have upheld the agency’s findings. Several firms have appealed, with Bikupan Datacenter entering financial restructuring and awaiting a decision from the Supreme Administrative Court.

Broader Context

The six Boden‑based firms were part of a larger 2024‑2026 audit that affected nine cryptocurrency companies nationwide, resulting in more than $50 million in unpaid taxes and penalties.
