The Sandbox Commits 1:1 Compensation After $700K Bridge Exploit

The Sandbox will repay eligible SAND holders on Base and BNB Chain with Ethereum‑based SAND from its treasury, following a bridge attack that drained roughly $700,000 worth of tokens.

The blockchain gaming platform The Sandbox announced a full 1:1 repayment for users affected by a bridge exploit that occurred on August 21. The attack drained 14.744 million SAND, valued at about $700,000, from an Ethereum vault.

Compensation Details

Eligible holders who possessed bridged SAND on Base or BNB Smart Chain before the breach will receive an equal amount of Ethereum‑based SAND. The repayment will be sourced from The Sandbox treasury, with no new tokens minted. Claims are expected to open within two weeks and will remain available for an additional two weeks.

Distribution Mechanism

More than 72% of the eligible balances are held on two centralized exchanges, which will distribute the compensation directly to their customers.

Technical Cause and Impact

The attacker exploited a configuration flaw in the Base and BNB Chain bridge contracts, allowing them to become the sole verifier of incoming bridge messages and mint unbacked tokens. Approximately 14.7 million SAND (about 0.5% of the token’s 3 billion maximum supply) were drained. Over 339 trillion unbacked SAND were minted on the two networks, but these tokens have been isolated and cannot be bridged or redeemed. SAND on Ethereum and Polygon remained unaffected.

Future Safeguards

The compromised bridge contracts will be permanently retired. Any future bridges to Base or BNB Chain will use newly deployed contracts.

Market Reaction

At the time of reporting, SAND traded around $0.04, down 10.4% over the previous seven days.
